Why Rails?
Michael Buffington spells out his reasons for switching to Ruby on Rails. My list would be almost identical, except should replace all his mentions of ColdFusion with Perl or ASP/VBScript.

About the Site
This is about the 15th rewrite of the software that runs this weblog.
In the past I've used Greymatter, Blogger, a hand-rolled Perl beast, Drupal, WordPress, and a hand-rolled Ruby on Rails app.
This time, it was written in Merb (with help from Paginator, merb_has_flash, BlueCloth, and merbful authentication). I suggest you check it (them) out.
