Why oh why was this show cancelled?
I've just spent some time going through some quotes from Arrested Development over at the Balboa Observer-Picayune (an excellent fan site).
Buster: Mom is becoming a little controlling.
Michael: What tipped you off? When she locked you out on the balcony again?
Buster: That was half my fault. I thought I saw a graham cracker out there.
Michael: You baited the balcony?
Lucille: Prove it.
See? See? Genius!
Now I see there's news that _AD_ may be picked up by another network, but I think the damage is done. If FOX would have only supported this Emmy Award-winning show, it could have gathered the higher ratings that they wanted. Oh well, at least we'll have the DVDs.

I think that a lot of the jokes on AD may get missed or go over the heads of the typical sitcom viewer who has been conditioned into the classic sitcom set-up of "one person says something, the other person says the funny thing, and then the audience laughs."
Or I could be completely wrong...

Nope, I think you've hit it right on the head. I thought NBC's version of The Office would suffer the same fate, but it seems to have gathered an audience. It's even been promoted to a better night in their lineup. So, the sitcom without a laugh track can work in some cases.
I wonder if a) _AD_ would have done better on another broadcast (not cable) network, or b) if it would have even been given a chance on another network.
