Good on Sharon Olds

I'm not very familiar with the poet Sharon Olds, but after reading her letter to Laura Bush--declining an invitation to National Book Festival events--I want to find out more. Here's a choice snippet:

What kept coming to the fore of my mind was that I would be taking food from the hand of the First Lady who represents the Administration that unleashed this war and that wills its continuation, even to the extent of permitting "extraordinary rendition": flying people to other countries where they will be tortured for us.

I read Ms. Olds' Letter to Laura Bush and wondered how indignant she was when Clinton invaded Haiti to impose just another thug to replace the existing one or when he bombed Kosovo from 20,000 ft., causing all kinds of collateral damage. I don't remember Sharon writing any poems to protest that. In her Laura letter she talks about maimed, crippled soldiers. What about the thousands Saddam hacked limbs off of or threw into giant recycling shredders? Does Ms. Olds have any pity on those victims? It's so nice to DO NOTHING a- bout the injustice in the world, just write letters, cry a little bit and say' "Well, at least I care". Typical Berkley liberal!!
