The road to housing stability looks different for every participant. That’s why a person-centered approach and tailored service plans make all the difference. When John, a Flexible Housing Subsidy Pool (FHSP) program participant, moved into his current home in August 2025, he was determined to make this housing opportunity work, with dedicated support from his Brilliant Corners FHSP Housing Coordinator.

John was a strong self-advocate who understood his rights as a tenant, but previously, he sometimes struggled to communicate concerns in ways that led to positive outcomes.

With support from his Housing Coordinator, John began developing new skills to strengthen his housing stability. Through ongoing coaching, problem-solving and encouragement, his Housing Coordinator helped him navigate challenges, build trust with service providers and better understand how housing partners could support his long-term success.

Over time, John’s approach and level of engagement transformed. He began viewing service providers and property management as partners, staying engaged during difficult conversations, participating in meetings and working collaboratively to address concerns.

One moment reflected that growth. During a home visit, John became frustrated about a housing-related issue that he felt needed immediate attention. After talking through the situation with his Housing Coordinator, he paused and evaluated his options.

“You’re right,” John said. “There is a solution.“

That new outlook demonstrated an important shift. John was practicing new communication skills and using the support systems available to him to find solutions

Today, John maintains a strong support network and takes an active role in maintaining housing stability. His journey demonstrates that long-term housing success requires more than a place to live—it also requires the skills, support and partnerships that help make stability last.
