We are excited to announce the opening of a long-awaited, modular-design supportive housing site in Los Angeles! In August, we welcomed Brilliant Corners clients into their new home in Hope on Alvarado, an 83-unit supportive housing complex between Historic Filipinotown and Westlake, comprising 61 studios and 22 one-bedrooms units. These modern and spacious new units sit in 5 stories with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Hollywood and Los Angeles.
Hope on Alvarado is the first of a series of the Hope Street Development team in LA to be built using modular shipping-container design. A total of 168 shipping containers, consisting of two different sizes, were utilized. In a process of truck-delivering and crane-lifting, these component parts were layered into place over the course of 14 months. The finished building is constructed around an inviting central courtyard providing privacy from street view, encouraging safety and a sense of community. The site offers a community room with table games, a TV lounge equipped with a full kitchen and a conference room with computers.
Brilliant Corners has been involved in the development of Hope on Alvarado since the project’s inception, as part of our Project-Based Voucher (PBV) program within the Los Angeles Flexible Housing Subsidy Program (FHSP), operated by Brilliant Corners in partnership with LA County’s Department of Health Services Housing for Health division. Since the launch of the FHSP program in 2014, Brilliant Corners has worked in collaboration with housing developers to create project-based housing supported by FHSP rent subsidies. Together, we create a pipeline of permanent supportive housing across Los Angeles County by providing a commitment of rental subsidies to a developer. This approach makes up approximately 20 percent (roughly 1,000 units) of Brilliant Corners’ active housing portfolio.
Brilliant Corners worked in collaboration with the Hope Street Development team to plan out all the details of the beautiful Hope on Alvarado site, and then partnered with LA County referral pathways to identify clients for the 83 units at the building.
Hope on Alvarado is the largest new site opened in collaboration with Brilliant Corner’s PBV team to date. Over the course of five weeks, all 83 units became occupied with Brilliant Corners clients. Tenants at Hope on Alvarado will be provided with wraparound intensive Case Management Services by Project 180 agency, with tenancy support services provided by Brilliant Corners. A team from Project 180 and two FPI Property Management personnel will be available onsite to facilitate case management and property management services.
